Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare is a giant amongst health insurance in America. It is funded by the federal government and provides health care to more than 40 million U.S citizens. It caters for pensioners, as well as those with previous medical problems, and disabled people.Medicare’s Plan A covers things like hospital visits, with Plan B covering expenses such as visits to the doctor. It does not cover every medical need, so those who are covered by Medicare, need to also have a look at Medigap, otherwise known as Medicare Supplement Insurance. It offers more comprehensive coverage than Medicare, with consumers paying these premiums through private insurance companies along with the Medicare Part B premium.

There are a dozen Medicare plans, identified alphabetically from A-L which offer various benefits for their customers. All kinds of expenses such as co-payments, deductibles and coinsurance are covered, as are preventative care, recovery at home and emergency foreign travel expenses. Each plan offers the same standard benefits irrespective of which insurance company becomes your insurer. States like Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Minnesota however, have variations in these standardized Medicare benefits. There are some states that don’t contain certain Medicare policies. Also, some states have a Medicare plan available called Medicare SELECT, which requires its users to only visit the physicians and hospitals outlined in the plan. Even though Medigap covers quite a number of variables, it does not cover all situations. There is no long-term hearing, visual or dental care available, and so hearing aids and glasses are not covered. For prescription drug expenses to be covered, you will probably be better off joining a Medicare Drug Plan (Part D), which is available through Medicare’s preferred private insurance companies.

Those who are already enrolled in Parts A and B of Medicare are permitted to buy a Medigap policy. The six-month open enrolment period is the best time to buy, it begins on the opening day of the month when you turn 65 and are already enrolled in Plan B. During this golden period, no insurance company can refuse to sell you Medigap, they are not allowed to delay, and they are not permitted to charge you extra due to any health problems.
