Aetna was founded in 1850 in Hartford, Connecticut, and started out as a life insurance provider. The name 'Aetna' came from the name of the largest and most active volcano in Europe, located in Sicily, and called Mount Etna. Looking over Aetna's history of setbacks, the company has stayed active through both World Wars and the Great Depression, and after these hard times, pulled out as one of the largest companies in the USA for insurance protection. While the corporate headquarters remain in Hartford, there are an additional two main offices located in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and in Middletown, Connecticut.
